- INSTRUCTIONS
-
- I. So you want to be a hero (starting a new game)
-
- This game may be played in two different modes. One player mode is
- initiated by typing
-
- BOBOLI 0
-
- at the command line. For two player mode, type
-
- BOBOLI N
-
- at the command line, where N is the com port you will be using (1 or 2).
- The two computers must be using opposite com ports (i.e. they can't both be
- using COM1). Once you have done this, you will see the title screen. When
- both players are ready to begin, press one of the action keys (Q,A,W,S) as
- mentioned below to begin.
-
-
-
- II. What's the point? (objective)
-
- There is only one objective in Boboli - To kill the evil wizard
- Sylabulus. However, he is extremely powerful, so it is recommended you
- battle lesser foes first to build up your strength for the confrontation.
- Every monster (or fellow Knight) you slay earns you Skill points. The
- tougher the monster, the greater the reward. When your Skill is maxed out
- (indicated by a meter in the status bar), you will gain a level and your
- Skill will return to zero. Gaining a level improves some of your
- attributes slightly. Eventually, you will be powerful enough to face
- Sylabulus himself.
- The attributes are:
-
- STRENGTH - The higher this is, the more damage you inflict with each
- hit. Also, having a high strength makes you heal faster.
- SPEED - This determines how quickly you move.
- INTELLECT - The higher your intellect, the more rapidly your magic
- points recharge, and the higher your maximum magic power
- is.
- ARMOR - A high armor rating means you take less damage from each
- attack, and helps you to heal more quickly.
-
-
-
- III. How do I do it? (controls)
-
- The basic controls are simple. The arrow keys or numeric keypad move
- Boboli around. The Action Keys are located in the upper left of your
- keyboard - Q,W, A, and S. Pressing Q swings Boboli's sword. Pressing W
- uses the currently selected item. If you are standing on an empty
- space, and you press A, you will drop your current item. If you are
- standing on an item and you press A, you will pick up the item. Pressing S
- moves the item cursor to the next item slot.
-
- arrows or 8, 2, 4, 6 Q swing sword W use current item
- move A get/drop item S next item
-
- ESC exits the game.
-
-
-
- IV. The goods (items)
-
- SWORDS
-
- To use a sword, simply select it as your current item. As long as it
- is the highlighted item, it will be used when you press the Swing button.
-
- Elven Sword - Crafted of mithril steel, this weapon is just as deadly as an
- ordinary sword, but many times lighter, allowing Boboli to swing it much
- more quickly than a normal sword.
-
- Giant Sword - This sword is imbued with a powerful enchantment, smashing
- any victim for twice as much damage as a normal strike.
-
- Soul Edge - This weapon is possessed by an ancient evil, and grows more
- powerful with each soul it claims.
-
- CROSSBOWS
-
- To use a crossbow, press the Use button when it is highlighted.
-
- Crossbow - The basic crossbow used by all mighty knights. Fires an arrow.
-
- Flaming Crossbow - Fires a flaming arrow, which does more damage than a
- regular arrow.
-
- Triple Crossbow - Fires out three arrows at once.
-
- SPELLS
-
- To cast a spell, press the Use button when it is highlighted. If
- Boboli simply sparkles when you do this, he doesn't have enough magic to
- cast the spell. He either needs to rest and regain his magic, or gain some
- levels to increase his intellect.
-
- Fireball - shoots out a ball of flame.
-
- Inferno - Useful for escaping when surrounded by foes. Surrounds Boboli
- with flames, knocking aside all of his enemies.
-
- Tornado - A small tornado is created, which can pick up enemies, holding
- them helplessly aloft.
-
- Nature - A field of flowers grows up at Boboli's feet. Fairly useless.
-
- Healing - Boboli regains up to half of his health.
-
- Shield - An impenetrable barrier of energy surrounds Boboli for a short
- time.
-
- Cloaking - Boboli is turned invisible for a short period of time.
-
- Summon - A mighty stone golem appears and defends Boboli.
-
-
-
- V. I'm bored! (map editing)
-
- In addition to Boboli, there is B-edit, the Boboli map editor. It is
- simple to operate, and frankly not very powerful. The keys are as follows:
-
- F2 Save map as "TEMP.MAP"
- F3 Load map named "TEMP.MAP"
- 8,6,4,2 move cursor
- Space plot current terrain
- -, = Previous/next terrain
- shift-- jump to first terrain
- shift-= jump to first obstacle terrain
- L lock/unlock. When locked, current terrain is plotted
- everywhere the cursor goes
- Top and middle row of letter keys will plot items:
- Q - no item (erase if there is an item already)
- A - Mirror shield (useless)
- W - Crossbow S - Tornado spell
- E - Bonehead generator D - Flaming crossbow
- R - Glob generator F - Nature spell
- T - Fireball spell G - Cloaking spell
- Y - Inferno spell H - Shield spell
- U - Triple crossbow J - Healing spell
- I - Elven sword K - Summon spell
- O - Giant sword
- P - Soul Edge
-
- Of note when editing a map:
- Generators are bigger than they appear in the editor (also, the
- editor does not show you which generator you are placing). A Sylabulus is
- automatically placed at a certain position very near the exact middle of
- the map - so plan accordingly. Orcs will appear randomly during gameplay
- on any square that is far away from both players and is normal "stony
- floor" terrain.
-
-
-
- VI. The Badguys (The badguys)
-
- Boboli faces several devilish and wily yet tremendously stupid foes
- on his quest.
-
- Glob - A green blob of slime. These ooze up from puddles on the floor and
- chase Boboli around. They are capable of spitting slime blobs but
- generally prefer poking Boboli with their acidic flesh. They are very
- slow, and easy to defeat.
-
- Bonehead - The walking dead rise from their graves to destroy Boboli.
- These guys move very quickly due to a distinct lack of skin (and muscle,
- nerves, and organs). They are tougher than Globs, but not by very much.
-
- Nasty Orc - Tough and ugly, these guys seem to come out of nowhere to hunt
- Boboli down with their huge axes.
-
- Golem - While not intrinsically evil, you don't want to get on the bad side
- of a Golem. They are made of stone and are very hard to kill. They are
- fiercely loyal to their creator, and squash anything that threatens him.
-
- Sylabulus - The evil wizard himself. He is nearly indestructible due to
- powerful enchantments that protect him from harm. He can cast a wide
- variety of spells, but his favorite is the Orb of Seeking spell. You must
- be very powerful to defeat him.
-
-
-
- VII. That's it (The end)
-
